When you would use this

Markdown is the format that everything else accepts: pasting a report into Notion or Obsidian, moving documentation into a wiki or a repository, or giving a long document to an AI assistant that works far better with clean text than with a PDF. It is also the quickest way to get quotable text out of a document.

Questions about PDF to Markdown

Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Every tool on this site runs inside your browser. Your file is read from your disk into your own browser's memory, processed there, and written back out. You can confirm this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and run the tool — you will not see your document being sent anywhere. It also means the tools keep working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
How accurate is the structure detection?
Headings and lists are inferred from font size, weight and position, because PDF does not record what is a heading — it records where ink goes. That works well on ordinary documents and less well on heavily designed ones. The text itself is always extracted accurately; it is only the structure that is a best guess.
Will tables survive?
Simple tables usually come through as pipe tables. Complex ones with merged cells generally do not, because the information needed to reconstruct them is not in the file.
What about scanned PDFs?
A scan is a picture, so there is no text to extract. Use OCR PDF first, then convert the result.
