Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Every tool on this site runs inside your browser. Your file is read from your disk into your own browser's memory, processed there, and written back out. You can confirm this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and run the tool — you will not see your document being sent anywhere. It also means the tools keep working if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Does it compare images and layout as well as text?

It compares text. Layout, formatting and image changes are not detected, so a document that was reflowed but not reworded will show no differences. For most contract and policy work, text is what matters.

What if the PDF is a scan?

A scanned page has no text to extract, so there is nothing to compare. Run both documents through OCR PDF first and then compare the results.
